Northeast Division CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
“The Baton and Beyond”  February 21-22, 2009, Hofstra University

8:00-9:00 A.M.      Registration (Registration fee $20; $10 for new members)
9:00-11:00 A.M.    Session I: Member’s Choice:  New Repertoire
                           Moderator: TBA
         Members will give 15-minute presentations introducing their favorite new works suitable for college-level orchestras, demonstrating with excerpts from the scores and recording of their chosen work and offering commentary on the work, the composer, and publication. Members may register for this session by email* (see below).

11:00-11:30 A.M.   Break – Coffee and Goodies
11:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M. Session II: Masterclass for Student Conductors
                           Moderator: Ricardo Averbach, Miami University (OH)
         Three selected student conductors will work in a Conducting Masterclass format with the Hofstra University Orchestra. Repertoire includes the Dvorak Symphony No. 9 ; other repertoire will be sent to the participants in the first half of January.

2:00 – 3:30 P.M.    Session III: “The Baton and Beyond”
                           Moderator: Timothy Perry, Binghamton University (NY)
         This year’s ‘theme session’ focuses on the preparation of successful academic conductors off the podium. The discussion will include procurement and management of resources (instruments, library, rooms, equipment); building productive relationships  in the department, division, school, college/university and community; recruitment and retention of players;  the Expectations game – local to NASM; navigating the tenure and promotion process; technology tools for the teaching conductor. Panel plus Open discussions.

3:30 – 3:45 P.M.    Break
3:45 – 5:00 P.M.    Session IV: State of the Art-Roundtable Discussion
             Open discussion of current and future development of the College Orchestra (Open Agenda): For sure, Budget ramifications and defense of the orchestra/music program; Problems of member institutions and collegial suggestions for solutions. This is our chance to put issues ‘on the table’ before dinner, when other things will be put on the table.

  • members wishing to present a work in the New repertoire session should email Timothy Perry (tperry@binghamton.edu) and David Ramael (david.ramael@hofstra.edu) with their name, contact information and the composer and title of the work they would like to present. Members are asked to bring score and recording of the work, if available.  If the composer consents, the recording will be included as part of a CD to be distributed to attending CODA members only.
