DIVISION INFORMATION:
News from the North Central Division (2009)
On Wednesday, Dec. 17, a half dozen or so CODA members met at the Midwest
Clinic in Chicago for food, fellowship and fun. Of course, lots of stories
were traded, and updates of activities given, but the real treat was the
mutual support CODA members always experience when they are together.
Present were Alex Jimenez, Jon Mitchell, Jim Barnes, Bruce Houglum, Tim
Dixon, Frank Diaz, and myself.
The next day, Dan Sommerville presented a session at the Midwest Clinic
entitled "Bring on the Winds...what you need to know to successfully
incorporate Winds and Percussion with your strings." The target audience
was high school string orchestra directors who would like to add winds, as
well as high school orchestra directors who are already doing this, and band
directors. The workshop orchestra was the Westlake High School orchestra
from Austin, Texas, Jimmy Edwards, director. They were a very capable and
responsive group.
We would encourage those of our membership who will be doing clinics at the
local, state and national level to have your clinic "sponsored" by CODA.
The more we can get our organization's name in front of educators, the
greater will be our impact as a group on music education, conducting, and
orchestral music.
Sincerely,
Dan Sommerville (Wheaton College, IL)
